Ball Court A-III

After visiting Stela I (“1”) and Temple IX, we walked over to Ball Court A-III.  Ball Court A-III sits between Temple IX and Temple X.  The Ball Court also joins the Central Plaza with the Court of the Hieroglyphic Staircase.  I felt that this ball court was just like pretty much every other Mayan ball court; in other words, nothing to write home about.

Copan has another ball court located southeast of the East Court.  Our March 2007 group visited it and had fun acting goofy in it.  I would like to see that ball court again.

According to the LONELY PLANET GUIDE to HONDURAS, 1st Edition, January 2007, ISBN 978-1-74059-150-8, page 152, Ball Court A-III is the 2nd largest Ball Court in Central America.  The Mayans built this ball court over 2 earlier ball courts and dedicated it in 731 A.D.  Thet Mayans carved Scarlet Macaw heads at the top of the sloping walls.  The ruler 18 Rabbit had the central marker in the ball court made.
