Temple II

Temple II is the main site tourist attraction with the serpent/monster mouth doorway.  I suspect that Temple II is partially restored; it did not feel the same as other temples with serpent mouth doorways, like a weakened energy.  We arrived in the afternoon when the sunlight was no longer directly on Temple II’s doorway, so I do not have a photo of the doorway in the sunlight.  Kind of a bummer.  It looks cool.  I did feel some energy in Temple II; it felt good.  I chanted mantras in the center room for quite a while and left an offering of aromatherapy.

According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this temple, Temple II encloses the Principal Plaza to the east, the most important cardinal point in the Mayan vision of the universe.  The east alludes to the place where the sun is reborn daily.  Temple II is built upon a small artificially leveled area and has only 1 story.  Temple II contains 8 rooms: 3 rooms in front and 5 rooms in back, all roofed over with the Mayan arch (vault?).  The rooms have benches for resting and spending the night.  Archaeologists suspect that Temple II was the house of an official of the hierarchy and that the  center room was used for ritual ceremonies.  Temple II had a roof comb above the upper center part.  The facade is one of the most complete and best preserved representations of Itzamna.
