The Akab-Dzib (Mayan for “obscure writing” or “dark writing” or writing in darkness”) is just beyond the Nunnery Complex. Some parts of this temple date to the 2nd Century AD.
Adele saw it when we first visited Chichen Itza; I saw it the second time when Enrique and William and I returned from Merida after seeing Ake. The Akab Dzib contains a lintel (carving above the doorway) inside which so far has defied interpretation, which is why this temple was named Akab-Dzib. It feels quiet and does not have any outwardly interesting features.
According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this temple, the Akab-Dzib has elements of the Classic Puuc architectural style. The temple has flat friezes with beveled molding. On the south, north, and west sides 17 rooms surround a solid central base, possibly of a 2nd floor that was planned but never built. One room on the south side has a sculpted lintel. On the lower part is a figure of a ruler seated on a throne, performing a ritual that involves a receptacle placed in front of him. Surrounding the dignitary are glyphic carvings for which the temple was named. Some interior walls show impressions of hands. Archaeologists suspect that this temple was the residence of the ruler represented on the lintel or members of his dynasty.
