Platform of the High Priest

Directly across from the Pyramid of the High Priest about 20 feet away is what I call the Platform of the High Priest.  This platform is a lot like the Platform of the Eagles and Jaguars in size and layout.  Also done in the Toltec architectural style.  I liked this platform but was mainly interested in the Pyramid of the High Priest.

According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this platform, it is another platform dedicated to Venus.  One of the platform’s panels contains a relief of a Serpent Bird Man, which archaeologists consider a representation of Quetzalcoatl/Kukulcan as the “Morning Star” (Venus).  Towards the stairway is matting, which symbolizes power.  Archaeologists have interpreted the corners as the “Knotting of the Years” alongside the planet Venus.  The Mayans originally painted the platform red, green, ocher, blue, and black.  Archaeologists found an offering consisting of a skull of a decapitated man in the eastern stairway.
