Group of 1,000 Columns
The Southeast Columns

The Southeast Columns are to the left of the Market and on the way to the Bath House.  They felt quiet and peaceful.

According to the INAH Plaque accompanying these columns, the Mayans originally covered the Southeast Columns with a vaulted roof which rested upon a long row of columns.  This building, which encloses the southeastern angle of the Plaza (Group of 1,000 Columns), clearly shows the modifications it underwent due to the Mayans constructing multiple inner walls.  Archaeologists are not clear whether the Mayans added these walls to offset the instability of the building or to change the use of the original spaces.
