The main attraction at Kabah is the Palace of the Masks, also known as the “Codz Poop”. It is the largest temple at the site and the best excavated/restored. This temple has 3 levels: a lower level, a middle level with lots of carved stones, and an upper level with the main temple itself. The back of the temple is also interesting because of the 2 standing figures called the Atlantes. I continue to wonder how the archaeologists decided on the name for these carved figures...
According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this temple, the front right of the middle section of the Palace of the Masks has an altar, which the archaeologists call the Altar of Glyphs. The Altar of Glyphs is a square structure measuring 21 feet on each side. All 4 faces have carved bas-relief glyphs. Some of the glyphs extend over more than 1 stone, indicating that the Mayans inscribed the glyphs after they built the altar. The outlining of the glyphs is much rougher than the other inscriptions at Kabah. Someone had already looted and destroyed the altar by the mid-19th Century. Archaeologists still have not entirely deciphered the inscription’s message.
