Yucatan - December 2007
San Gervasio

On our last day on Cozumel, Adele and I visited a Mayan ceremonial site dedicated to the Deity Ixchel, presently called San Gervasio.  According to the LONELY PLANET: Mexico 9th Edition, 2004, ISBN 1-74059-686-2, page 913,  “Every Mayan woman on the Yucatan Peninsula and beyond was expected to make at least one pilgrimage here to pay tribute to Ixchel - the Goddess of Fertility and the Moon - at a temple erected in her honor at San Gervasio, near the center of the island.”.  Strangely enough, Adele and I met several women (very few men) while walking through this site.

The site contains very few signs or plaques explaining the temples or site.  In fact, our hotel offered more information about this site than the site itself.
