Temple IV

After visiting Temple III, we walked over to Temple IV.   Temple IV is my favorite in the East Plaza.  I really enjoyed walking up, around, and in this temple.

According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this temple, archaeologists suspect that the leaders inhabited some of the rooms of Temple IV.  Temple IV has rooms on the upper part that form a patio on 3 sides; the majority of these rooms still have their benches, used for resting and sleeping.  Although the Mayans modified Temple IV with different additions over time, particularly on its north side, some of the Rio Bec architecture remains.  Among them are: the rounded corners; non-utilitarian stairways on the east and west sides; and panels of stylized masks as a complement to some of the facades.  Some of the decorative elements reproduce imaginary beings and others combine feline and serpent characteristics.
