Temple III

After visiting Temple II, we walked over to Temple III.  Temple III is long, narrow, and short, like the Nohoch Na temples of Dzibilchaltun, Edzna, and Santa Rosa Xtampak.  I did not feel anything in it.  The main attraction for me was the circular altar in front of this temple.

According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this temple, Temple III was originally a simple palace which the Mayans modified over time, resulting in 2 rows of superimposed rooms.  Among the principal modifications are: the building of a temazcal (steam bath) on the upper level and the addition of a stairway whose center coincides with the circular altar located to the front of the temple.
