Nohoch Na

After visiting the Platform of the Knives, we walked into the Grand Plaza and over to the “Nohoch Na”.  “Nohoch Na” is Yucatec Mayan for “big house”.  Nohoch Na reminds me of Edifice XLIV (Roman numeral “44”) in Dzibilchaltun; both are long narrow temples.

According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this temple, Nohoch Na is 135 meters long (about 438 3/4 feet) lying in a north-south direction,  31 meters (about 100 3/4 feet) wide and 9 meters (about 29 1/4 feet) high.  A very wide stairway with 15 enormous steps covers almost the entire east (front) side.  The upper part contains 4 long rooms, which are entered between wide pilasters.  The inside spaces suggest administrative uses.  The large steps suggest that they could have served as seats in events celebrated in the Principal Plaza.  The Mayans built both Nohoch Na and Edifice XLIV in Dzibilchaltun in the Peten monumental architectural style, which precedes other Mayan styles and is prevalent throughout the Yucatan peninsula, from northern Guatemala, southern Campeche, and Qunitana Roo.
