Dzibilchaltun

After visiting Uxmal, Enrique and I visited the Mayan city of Dzibilchaltun.  Dzibilchaltun is known for its Temple of the 7 Dolls.  It was definitely the main attraction for me.  Dzibilchaltun is one of the oldest Mayan sites.  The Mexican government is restoring the site, slowly but surely.

According to the INAH Sign accompanying this site, the Mayans inhabited Dzibilchaltun from around 300 B.C. until the Spanish Conquest.  The Late Classic Period (600 - 900 A.D.) was the period of major growth, when the Mayans reached a population of 20,000.  Dzibilchaltun occupies about 9 square kilometers (about 3 1/2 square miles).  Dzibilchaltun has a concentric design, with smaller groupings repeating the same pattern.  The Central Zone has large squares connected by inner roads, all within an area of 3 square kilometers (about 1.2 square miles).  The administrative and religious elite occupied the Central Zone.
