After visiting Stela H in the Grand Plaza for the last time this trip, we walked down the street to Stela V. Stela V is alongside the road from the town to Copan, closer to Copan than Stela VI. I liked this Stela. Stela V is carved on both sides, although the figure on the south/back side is missing most of his face. Not sure why...
According to the government sign accompanying these Stelae, the Mayan dedicated Stela V and Stela VI during the 12th Dynastic Ruler of Copan K’ahk’ Uti’ Ha’ K’awil’s reign. The Mayans dedicated Stela V in 667 A.D. The ruler is depicted on Stela V dressed in a costume style of Central Mexico and may be in his youth. The figure appears to be looking toward a field where a vibrant residential community once flourished. Archaeologists found a rich 6th Century [A.D.] tomb in this locale.
